Dear Perpetual Reader:
I hope all is well with you, your family, work and business. To say we are in a difficult economic time is an understatement. After the first read of my manuscript about ten years ago, my first editor said, "Don't give up your day job." Don't worry, I probably never will. Helping businesses find the capital they need to grow their businesses is what I do (at least during the day). So, send on those application and questions and LeaseSource will continue to find solutions.
When I send out a newsletter (for lack of a better name) it will have information about
Perpetual and the upcoming continuation of the series, the latest on the Picken's Plan and other green energy issues and products and of course business finance issues. What a combination.
Regarding my nights and weekends vocation these past fifteen or so years, thanks again to all of you who have bought Perpetual. For you that have read Perpetual 1, ReSearch, and are anticipating the next, I hope to have some news about Perpetual II by spring.
Please see below on how to order Perpetual for Christmas and holiday presents. For general information go to www.BrianHuey.com .
If you pass on Perpetual on to others who knows, one day . . .
Warm Holiday Wishes,

Money
or No Money, That is the Question Alt Energy two
In the face of the Senate failing to pass the Big Three bailout today which in total dollars was a shadow of the bank bailout, where's the beef for Joe and Josette on Main Street? How long will it take for eight hundred billion to trickle down to business and consumer borrowers? Probably a very long time, if ever and here is why. The economy and legislators have created a catch 22.  One of the key reasons we are in this mess is because the Fed gave Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac incentive to lend. Then the lending crazed sibling real estate mortgage duo, and all their 2nd tier bank and funding source cousins, sold off the portfolios indiscriminately. "Not
our problem now," they said while running back to the phones to lend more to those who could not pay it back.
The fear of making the same mistake again is keeping loan officers on Main Street ultra-conservative. This apprehension to lend to even good credit applicants is what will hold the economy down and in my opinion make the bailout a complete failure.
So how does LeaseSource and the leasing industry fit into this crisis?  It's tough here too, but The good news is that many of our sources of funds are not tied to the real estate crunched banks. So, LeaseSource has funds available and you don't have to be Bill Gates to get approved.  If customers lock in their loans and leases by year end there are certain tax advantages that can be achieved. Don't leave that money on the table for Uncle Sam -- purchase the equipment you need by the end of the year.

The Real Dr. Jackson?

I don't believe the Pickens Plan www.PickensPlan.com is perfect; nor is any other plan. But I do believe that any plan is better than no plan. The premise of the Perpetual series is about dreamers and entrepreneurs wishing to make this world a better place, against all odds. In future issues of this schizophrenic finance and novel writing cyber-pulp rag, I'll review alternative energy and green inventions that could be the future of our survival.
THE REAL McCoy
Recently a Perpetual reader, a friend in the natural gas pipeline investment business, sent me an article about a scientist in Cranbury, N.J. who has an energy fuel cell using a new hydrogen molecule that other scientists say doesn't exist.  He sure sounds like the real McCoy of my fictional character Dr. Cameron T. Jackson who discovered something similar in 1959 . . .

See: FSB "Green Technology, The End of Oil?", by Mina Kimes, pg 29 September 2008.
An entrepreneur says he has found a new cheap source of energy. Trouble is, it violates the laws of physics
Harvard trained physicist Dr. Randell Mills, CEO of BlackLight Power, claims that he has created a fuel cell that can convert the hydrogen found in water into inexpensive energy. The hitch is that the theory behind the process undermines the principles of quantum mechanics - and it's rejected by almost the entire scientific community. FSB's Mina Kimes looks at the controversial entrepreneur and his green technology.

SEND ME IDEAS
Please send me articles and links on great new energy and GREEN inventions, and I'll include them in future issues. Who knows, something may end up between the lines in a future Perpetual novel. My agent, Shirley Reading, ended up on Page 287 simply because she asked me, "What are you writing," one day in a Caribou coffee shop a few years ago!

No government or corporation will control perpetual energy.
My discovery will be free for the world, or nobody gets it at all!
His own words haunt Dr. Jackson after his wife's suspicious death. Can a reclusive man at a Lake Michigan compound, surrounded by security tighter than the White House, protect his son and himself from ever-powerful enemies? A generation later, an all-American whiz kid named Matthew Eaton learns the answer to that question. Who, if anyone, will control Dr. Jackson's miracle of science?
The Perpetual series bursts off the first page when Matthew witnesses three men gunned down before his eyes. But not before he and Maria are handed the keys to solving one of society's greatest dilemmas-how the world can fuel its insatiable energy demands. Drawn by a chance encounter into the life of a charismatic stranger called Cracker Jack, Matthew is soon dodging bullets from evildoers-to whom profit trumps life.
While Matthew and Maria take flight along the East Coast in a battered VW Bus,seemingly unrelated events unfold around the globe, some set in motion decades before Matthew was born. Can Matthew trust those closest to him? Can he trust the FBI? Can he trust anyone?
Pitted against daunting forces-U.S. government-trained assassins, the oil industry, and Middle Eastern Islamic extremists-trouble abounds for Matthew and Maria at every turn. Their allies, a disheveled FBI agent and a mysterious philanthropic tutor, may be helpless to save them. Matthew faces choices that inevitably alter his fate and the future of all those around him, choices that could change the entire world.

Want to lower the true cost of ownership on your business equipment?
Here's how:

Business Equipment
Business owners who acquire equipment including machinery, computers, and other tangible goods, usually prefer a substantial deduction in a single tax year, rather tha n a little at a time over a number of years. This accelerated deduction is known by its section in the tax code: a Section 179 deduction.
The 2008 law increases the amount of qualified property that a business can expense under Section 179 to $250,000.This incentive is for equipment placed in service between December 31, 2007 and January 1, 2009 and is designed for small companies, so the deduction phases out when a business purchases more than $800,000 in one year. (Companies cannot write off more than their taxable income).

Bonus Depreciation 2008
The law passed in 2008 also created a bonus depreciation of 50% for qualifying assets.
This bonus is in addition to regular first-year depreciation.

Benefits of a Non-Tax/Capital Lease
The benefit of a Non-Tax/Capital Lease is that it can take advantage of Section 179: expense up to $250,000 if the equipment is put in use in 2008.
In addition, you may depreciate any excess on the depreciation schedule for that asset. Examples of Non-Tax/Capital Leases include a $1.00 Buyout, an Equipment Finance Agreement (EFA), and a 10% Purchase Upon Termination (PUT) Lease. Example Calculation: Assume you finance $300,000 worth of business equipment, put it in use in 2008, and take advantage of Section 179. Your tax savings could be significant:
Equipment Cost Example:  $300,000
1st Year Write Off:                                                $  250,000
($250,000 is the maximum Section 179 write-off in 2008)

50% Bonus Depreciation                                      $    25,000
(On remaining value: $300,000 - $250,000 = $50,000; $50,000 x 50% = $25,000)

Normal 1st Year Depreciation:                              $      5,000
(Depreciation calculated at 5 years = 20%; $25,000 x 20% = $5,000)

Total 1st Year Deduction:                                      $  280,000
($250,000 + $25,000 + $5,000 = $280,000)

Tax Savings Assuming Rate of 35%:                   $    98,000
($280,000 x .35 = $98,000)
Note:
For complete details, or changes to the tax incentives,
please visit www.irs.gov or contact the IRS helpline at:   800 .. 829 .. 4933

Tax Code Section 179 & Election to Expense Detail
The election, which is made on Form 4562, is for the tax year the property was placed in service or an amended return filed within the time prescribed by law. The total cost of property that may be expensed for any tax year cannot exceed the total amount of taxable income during the tax year. Section 179 property is property that you acquire by purchase for use in the active conduct of your business. To ensure property qualifies, reference Publication 946.

This expense deduction is provided for taxpayers (other than estates, trusts or certain non-corporate lessors) who elect to treat the cost of qualifying property as an expense rather than a capital expenditure. Under Section 179, equipment purchases, up to the amount approved for a given year, can be expensed (deducted from taxable income) if installed by December 31st. Non-Tax leases qualify for this deduction in their year of inception. Any excess above the expensed amount can be depreciated depending on the equipment type. Not all states follow federal law. Contact your tax advisor for further detail or visit www.irs.gov for specific detail.

Tax/True Lease Benefits
If a lease is a Tax Lease/True Lease, the lessor retains ownership and you, as the lessee, may be allowed to claim the entire amount of the monthly investment as a tax deduction. Many rental contracts qualify as a true lease including a 10% Option and a Fair Market Value Lease.

Example Calculation: Assume that you have a Tax/True Lease with a $1,000 monthly payment, the below tax savings that may be available:
Example:

Monthly investment = $ 1,000
Finance Term = 36 months
Tax bracket = 35%
Monthly tax savings = $1,000 x .35 = $350.00
Total tax savings over the term of the contract = $12,600.00

Act Now!
To take advantage of the 2008 incentives and the substantial tax savings, your business equipment must be put in use by year-end. Please contact your tax advisor to learn about the specific impact to your business.

Perpetual the movie? Fun Facts about Perpetual P2

Perpetual II (P2) is racing to the fevered pitch ending, and will soon go to the editors. As P1 - P3 were originally written as one novel, it's been a riot layering into the pages new things like Vladimir Putin's role in Perpetual (what do you think, good guy or bad guy?), and many other key events. The other side of the layer coin is taking things out to increase the suspense. Oh, I know, these are things that a novelist shouldn't discuss, but hey, if you are on the recipient end of this blog (I had to find a way to use the word blog), then you are key to Perpetual's success. I think what we are looking for . . . what is the new term? Viral marketing? We used to call it reaching the point of critical mass. For example, my brother bought a few books and handed them to members of a movie cast in Santa Fe, one recipient was Jeff Bridges, another the producer. Hey . . . you never know. So, which one of you has tea with Oprah? (I know, that is now old humor -- but really, if you do . . .).

P1 spans the era from 1950 to 1995, P2 from 1995 - 2003 and P3 should bring you up through present day events (or at least up to the point of editing which is about nine months prior to the publication date. Writing a series of novels that follow events is challenging and sometimes heartbreaking. As my mind and the characters spun from 1995 through the end of the decade, then the lackluster Y2K, and of course the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Sadly, it becomes crystal clear that our world is not the same place we all knew as children.

Speaking of Terror. Alert:  Hurry, Report Errors in P1, the First Edition

Some of you are the writer's opposite. You are avid readers and ardent editors (bless you). If you found an error, or any aggravating little nuances, please send me the page number and the error. We'll be sending in corrections to the publisher soon and the trade-paperback will be all the better. I have to tell you, Maria, along with a new vibrant character, Penelope, is incensed that there's even a single error especially after all the revisions and editing that go into bringing the story to you. Thankfully, Estebanez really doesn't care. He's found a new stash of wine and Cuban cigars, and Matthew is a bit busy dodging new villains to give it much thought.

Cool Website Interaction

After Perpetual P2 hits the book shelves (targeted for 2009), there will be password links that only readers can access, where you can read more dialogue. I call this added "wrap." Don't you hate finishing a novel and wondering about things? Or hearing the first part of a news report but never hearing the conclusion? Here, www.BrianHuey.com/Wrap the characters may wrap-up possible questions that might remain in the recesses of your mind, like what are the components of the CJ Energy Cell.  According to the Center for Energy Nanotechnology at Wake Forest University . . . CJ Energy is entirely possible!  That, my friends is new news: remember, Dr. Cameron Tremont Jackson, the Jules Verne of Energy, was sixty years before his time.  Stay tuned . . . .  Another question that readers send me is, What about Cracker Jack?  Well, what about him?

November 1st, 2008

Finally, watch for a special announcement on November 1st, 2008.

That’s all for now, F&F (Family & Friends, not Frick & Frack – were they ice skaters?); http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frick_and_Frack ,

Matthew and Maria, CJ Energy Cells . . . Perpetual would be much less without you.

Thank you again for jumping on the band-wagon, and I promise, Perpetual P2 will be worth the wait.

Warm Regards,

-- B r i a n
